Acura Integra Type R

Referred to by some as the “best handling front-wheel drive car of all time”, the Acura Integra R was one of those special gems that was made to slay the compact sports vehicles on the market at the time. Incredibly difficult to find these days, as most Integra Rs have been crashed in street races or modified to death, they’ve become even more iconic now than ever before. With a sporty nature and an engine like a lion’s roar, it was the little Acura that could.

The Chronicle of the Acura Integra Type R

The Acura Integra Type R launched to the Japanese market in 1995 as a direct competitor of the Volkswagen Golf GTI. This was one of the first Acura cars to enter Honda’s high-end lineup, as they were out to compete with other luxury brands in the American market and could not compete with the Honda name. In 1997, the Integra-R finally hit the U.S. market.

The Acura Integra Type R At Peak Performance

The Acura Integra Type R only lasted until the end of 2001. It had a tiny 1.7L four-cylinder engine that was somehow able to output 195 horsepower thanks to forced induction technology. This gave it a 0-60 range of just under seven seconds. Only two colors were available in 2000 and 2001, including Phoenix Yellow and Black Pearl.

A Timeline of the Acura Integra Type R

The Acura Integra Type R was introduced in 1997 with a 195 horsepower 1.8L four-cylinder engine. It utilized short suspension and large breaks on a small and lightweight body. It provided more horsepower per liter than any other U.S. car with mass-produced, aspirated engines. The GS and GS-R models featured 140 horsepower and 16-spoke alloy wheels.

By 1998, the car received a bit of an aesthetic upgrade with revised bumpers and rear light clusters. It was only available in white during this years. In 1999, the Type-R hatchback and coupe models were taken off the lineup, leaving the LS, GS, and GS-R models on the lineup.

By 2001, the Type-R came back with a simulated carbon fiber instrument panel, standard AC, leather upholstery, and an aluminum shift knob.
