Mount Stanley, also known as Mount Ngaliema, is part of the Rwenzori Range in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The mountain is named after Sir Henry Morton Stanley, an explorer and journalist.

Why Is It Famous?

Mount Stanley is famous for its status as the highest mountain in Uganda as well as in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is also Africa’s third-highest mountain.

This mountain is in the UNESCO World Heritage Site that is the Rwenzori Mountains National Park.

Geological Description

Standing at an elevation of 5,109 meters, Mount Stanley is still high enough to continue supporting glaciers. The mountain has two twin summits as well as multiple lower peaks. Margherita Peak honors Queen Margherita of Italy and is the 5,109-meter peak. Alexandra peak is at 5,091 meters, and Albert is at 5,087 meters. Savoia, Ellena, Elizabeth, Phillip, and Moebius peaks are between 4,916 and 4,977 meters while the Great Tooth Peak is at 4,603 meters.

This is a fault-block mountain that rises between two of the African Rift System’s rifts. The mountain was created within the past 10 million years. Mount Stanley has quartzite and gneiss. It also has an impressive collection of forests, moss, and bogs.

Events in Time

In 1906, Mount Stanley’s first recorded ascent occurred. It involved J. Brocherel, C. Ollier, J. Petigax, and Luigi Amedeo. The Duke of Abruzzi led the expedition that included over 300 porters, six scientists, a photographer, and four alpine guides.

There had been numerous rumors of the existence of Mount Stanley throughout the years, but there were no confirmed sightings until 1876 when Henry Morton Stanley first saw the range. The following year, he realized that one of the mountains was covered in snow.


Mount Stanley is the highest mountain in two different African countries and known for its amazing forests and snow-covered peak.
