Fiat 500L

Though the hoard of tiny Fiat vehicles may be cute and charming, none of them were very practical until the 500L arrived.

The Fiat 500L is a small Italian wagon that provides more room than the tiny 500 model, though it comes with the same Italian styling that we expect from Fiat.

Developing the Fiat 500L

The Fiat 500L came about back in 2010 as a replacement for the Fiat Idea, as well as the Fiat Idea variant, the Lancia Musa. The 500L was based on the “Small” platform. It wasn’t until 2014 that the vehicle hit the United States market.

The 500’s Big Brother – Technology and Performance of the Fiat 500L

While it is certainly larger than the 500, the 2019 Fiat 500L takes a lot of the performance features from its younger brother. It utilizes a 1.4L turbocharged four-cylinder engine that puts out 160 horsepower. The main difference between this car and the 500 is that a six-speed automatic transmission is standard. Front-wheel-drive is also the only setup.

All 500L models come with a 7.0” infotainment touchscreen that comes complete with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The audio system is developed by Beats. While they do offer optional parking sensors for the 500L, Fiat does not provide any other usual driver-assistance features.

The First Generation of the Fiat 500L (2014-Present)

The Fiat 500L is still in its first generation, though in 2018, it received one of its very first major updates. All of the 500L models received a revised exterior styling, as well as a TFT instrument display screen, which acted as a replacement for the LCD instrument display system on earlier models.

The Uconnect 4C 7.0” touchscreen infotainment system became standard as an upgraded version of the Uconnect 3 system. It was renamed the 500L Wagon at this point as well.

The Fiat 500L In the News

In recent Fiat news, the popular Fiat 500 will be cut from the lineup in 2020, leaving only the Fiat 500X and the Fiat 500L on the market.

Celebrity Endorsements of the Fiat 500L

While we have been unable to find any celebrities cruising around in their Fiat 500L models, we did see P. Diddy hosting a Fiat 500L desert party in a large campaign from Fiat during the Super Bowl.

Best Fiat 500L Groups

The Fiat 500 is definitely the most sought after of the Fiat lineup, though there is still a small Facebook group for Fiat 500L owners to share their love for the bigger brother.

The Fiat 500L – A Fiat Equipped For Life

Fiat was never here to pretend that the Fiat 500 was anything more than a cute little car that could cruise around the neighborhood and brighten up someone’s day. It wasn’t until the 500L rolled off of factory lines that they could say they entered a more utilitarian market. With a lot of the same Italian stylings that we know and love, the 500L is so far here to stay. We can only hope that Fiat decides to step it up in terms of performance over the next decade.
