The Ford Explorer was first introduced to the market back in 1990 as the first four-door SUV that the For company produced. It was made to replace the Ford Bronco II, which was their top two-door SUV at the time.

An SUV Built For Adventure – The Technology and Performance of the Ford Explorer

The 2020 Ford Explorer comes with the choice of a few engines, including the 2.3L four-cylinder engine that provides 300 horsepower, as well as the twin-turbocharged 3.0L V-6 engine that provides 365 horsepower. There is even a hybrid in the lineup now, which utilizes a 3.3L V-6 engine paired with an electric motor to provide 318 horsepower. The SUV uses rear-wheel-drive with optional all-wheel-drive, which is paired with a ten-speed automatic transmission.

The interior includes an 8.0” touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities. There is also an upgradable Co-Pilot360 Package with a ton of driver-assistance features, including blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, and automated emergency braking.

A Condensed Timeline of the Ford Explorer

  • First Generation Ford Explorer (1991-1994)

The first-generation Ford Explorer was built in two and four-door models with 4.0L Cologne V-6 engines that produced 155 horsepower. A Ford Explorer Limited edition was released in 1993.

  • Second Generation Ford Explorer (1995-2001)

The second-generation Ford Explorer was offered in three and five-door configurations with standard rear-wheel-drive. It was built on a Ford U1 platform. Ford also introduced a 5.0L V-8 engine as an option.

  • Third Generation Ford Explorer (2002-2005)

The third-generation Ford Explorer became the second rear-wheel-drive Ford with four-wheel independent suspension. The body was enlarged to fit a third row of seats.

  • Fourth Generation Ford Explorer (2006-2010)

New features were added to the Ford Explorer during the fourth generation, including electronic stability control, a tire-pressure monitoring system, and available right-hand-drive. The overall design of the SUV became a lot more luxurious. 

  • Fifth Generation Ford Explorer (2011-2019)

The fifth-generation Ford Explorer featured a variety of differences, including stepped-style headlamps and tail lamps, a Rover-like floating roof effects, and a three-bar design grille. The engine was upgraded with a 2.3L EcoBoost engine by 2015. 

  • Sixth Generation Ford Explorer (2020-Present)

The sixth-generation Explorer launched with a hybrid version by its side, as well as an array of technological features, such as the updated infotainment system.
