While its powertrain might not be blowing minds, the Ford Fusion Hybrid is easily one of the best handling hybrid cars in its class.

For mid-sized car lovers everywhere, the Ford Fusion Hybrid provides value and technology for commuting, road tripping, and much, much more. It also marks the beginning of a serious Ford revolution towards more eco-friendly American vehicles.

A History of the Ford Fusion Hybrid

The Ford Fusion Hybrid was first announced at the North American International Auto Show back in 2005, though it didn’t hit the public until 2006. It wasn’t until 2010, after tons of press testing and private orders, that the Ford Fusion Hybrid became available to everyday drivers.

Design and Technology of the Ford Fusion Hybrid

The 2020 Ford Fusion Hybrid comes complete with a 2.0L i-VCT Atkinson-Cycle hybrid engine and electric motor. It uses eCVT automatic transmission and front-wheel-drive, as well as a Lithium-ion battery. The car utilizes SmartGauge with EcoGuide, which is a dual-LCD gauge display that provides drivers with all of the information about the car in real-time to help optimize overall efficiency.

Some of the standard features on the Ford Fusion Hybrid include auto high beam headlamps, lane-keeping system, pre-collision assist, and a rearview camera. These all come standard in Ford’s new Co-Pilot360 package.

A Short Timeline of the Ford Fusion Hybrid

  • First Generation Ford Fusion Hybrid (2010-2012)

The first-generation utilized a 2.5L Atkinson-Cycle I4 that helped to produce 156 horsepower. The interior featured a 4.3” high-resolution dual-LCD screen with information on battery levels, fuel economy, and more.

  • Second Generation Ford Fusion Hybrid (2013-Present)

The second-generation Ford Fusion Hybrid was introduced in 2013 alongside the standard Ford Fusion. The nickel-metal hybrid batteries that were used in the first-gen Hybrids were taken over by Lithium-ion batteries. The engine was changed to a 2.0L Atkinson-Cycle Inline-four engine with an output of 185 horsepower.

The Ford Fusion Hybrid in the News

In recent news, Ford is discovering some serious issues with the bugs that are hitting the autonomous Ford Fusion Hybrids. While it isn’t a big deal for bugs to splatter against grilles and windshields of regular cars, the splattered bugs are affecting autonomous sensors. Ford is now in the works trying to develop some self-cleaning devices. This feature is not only efficient, but can greatly decrease the time and effort that Fusion owners dedicate to taking care of their vehicle.

Celebrity Endorsements of the Ford Fusion Hybrid

One of the most famous celebrity drivers of the Ford Fusion Hybrid is Steve Ballmer, who is the current owner of the Los Angeles Clippers and the former CEO of Microsoft. Though he is worth over $20 billion, he still decides to drive around in an economical Ford Fusion Hybrid. This speaks to the efficiency of the vehicle itself, as well as to the comfort of its features.

One of the best places to meet and talk with other Ford Fusion Hybrid owners and enthusiasts is the Ford Fusion Hybrid Forum.  Drivers and owners of Ford Fusion Hybrid’s come together to discuss the vehicle, troubleshoot, talk about modifications, and share experiences.
