Harley-Davidson really outdid itself with the Road Glide Ultra!
Few, if any, other motorcycle brands have been able to create so many motorcycles, superbikes, or scooters that fall into the realm of classics as Harley-Davidson. When looking at the Road Glide Ultra series, it should be easy to see why.
Cult Classic Since the Start
Whether Harley was battling war after war, the Great Depression, or any of the other economic calamities that have besieged the US since 1901, the Harley-Davidson Motor Company has remained strong.
By producing classic after classic in a hallmark design, Harley-Davidson has cemented its claim to fame as the number one American motorcycle company. With the introduction of the Road Glide Ultra in 1989
The first Harley-Davidson Tour Glide was released in 1979, giving engineers and designers a full decade to improve before releasing this model to the American markets.
Over the years, the design changed significantly. As of 2019, the original Road Glide Ultra models have been out of production for just about a decade, but the newer models just keep on coming.
Timeline of Changes
There are gaps here and there in the Ultra’s family tree, because Harley likes to shake up its production dates and bounce bikes around from one family to the other.
All in the name of the best machine, we suppose.
Harley-Davidson Road Glide Ultra FLT (1989-1996)
These models used engines that were almost identical to those in use in the other Tour Glide models except for a few key changes, namely the increase in the alternator size up to a brand new 32 in 1989.
Harley-Davidson Road Glide Ultra FLTRU (2017-present)
After focusing production on other models in the Road Glide family for just about 20 years, Harley-Davidson eventually came back to the tried and true designs of the Ultra, but with redesigned wheels, tire widths, and a significantly improved engine.
More Ultras and Other Road Glides to Come
As of 2019, Harley-Davidson continues to announce new and improved models of the Road Glide Ultra, with the 2020 version having been announced for sneak-peak promotions.
This comes as no surprise to the countless fans of the earlier Ultra models but who are we to say “I told you so” to the Harley-Davidson Motor Company?
Living In Its Series’ Shadow
Unfortunately, the Road Glide Ultra has never appeared in any TV show or film with any major budget or social impact. That said, other Road Glide motorcycles have been used on a wide array of TV and film sets.
As with any Harley-Davidson motorcycle, social groups are just a click away. Harley-Davidson groups, such as this Road Glide owners group with more than 20,000 members, are almost always massive.
Harley-Davidson Road Glide Ultra – Yet Another Cruising Masterpiece
The day Harley-Davidson loses its edge and stop producing top-notch cruising masterpieces is the day that Hell freezes over.
As long as you’re on the saddle of a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, superbike, or scooter, you can place a sure bet that you’ll be in the company of millions of other rides the world over.
