Rolls-Royce Corniche

There is no doubt that Rolls-Royce has produced a long line of luxury vehicles over the years. The company prides itself on being one of the best luxury automakers in the world. Though the company has launched into the modern world with high-tech systems and incredible motors, no other Rolls-Royce will ever be able to top the OG, the Rolls-Royce Corniche.

A Rich History of the Rolls-Royce Corniche

The Corniche was originally manufactured as a development of the Silver Shadow, a popular Rolls-Royce model of the time. Though the very first Corniche was technically made in 1939 as a prototype, it wasn’t until 1971 that the Corniche hit the market in full swing.

Elegance in Technology –  Rolls-Royce Corniche

The last Rolls-Royce Corniche was manufactured in 2000 after BMW purchased the company. It came with a 6.75L turbocharged V-8 engine made by Rolls-Royce that was able to produce 325 horsepower. The car utilized Connolly Leather interior, chrome gauges, exotic wood trims, and Wilton wool carpets.

Some of the top technology features included the six-disc CD changer and dual automatic temperature control.

An Evolution of the Rolls-Royce Corniche

  • First Generation Rolls-Royce Corniche (1971-1987)

The first-generation Rolls-Royce Corniche was based on the 1965 Silver Shadow coupe, though it had an expensive wood and leather interior. There were just over 4,300 of these vehicles produced, each with V-8 engines and twin SU carburetors. By 1977, the car featured an aluminum radiator and air-conditioning.

  • Second Generation Rolls-Royce Corniche (1988-1989)

The second-generation Rolls-Royce featured new anti-lock brakes, as well as chrome-plated bumpers and a redesigned rear license plate outline. This was one of the shortest Corniche generations with only 1,234 cars produced.

  • Third Generation Rolls-Royce Corniche (1989-1993)

The third-generation Corniche featured brand new alloy wheels and airbags, which had become standard on Rolls-Royce vehicles. The transmission was updated to an advanced four-speed automatic, and there was an MK Motronic system paired with the fuel injection.

  • Fourth Generation Rolls-Royce Corniche (1992-1995)

The four-speed automatic was replaced with a three-speed GM400 unit, and the rear window was made of glass rather than the plastic that was on the older models. The top latch became automatic in this generation as well. All of these cars came with a cream hood and a Ming Blue body finish.

  • Fifth Generation Rolls-Royce Corniche (2000)

The 2000 Corniche came around after BMW acquired the company. It was the most expensive car of the time, coming to $359,900.

The Rolls-Royce Corniche in the News

In recent Rolls-Royce news, Claude VonStroke, the president of the Dirtybird clan, has just put his custom 1980 Corniche up for sale on Craigslist.

Celebrity Endorsements of the Rolls-Royce Corniche

Because only wealthy people could afford this car, there were some massively famous owners, including Paul McCartney and Elton John. See the Corniche model that McCartney owned in action below!

Best Rolls-Royce Corniche Groups

Though we have yet to stumble across a Rolls-Royce club or group that is specific to the Corniche, there is a massive Rolls-Royce Owners Club with owners and enthusiasts from all over the world.

The Rolls-Royce Corniche – Buying Luxury

Though Rolls-Royce has produced a wide variety of memorable vehicles over the years, there has been nothing quite as luxurious and vintage as the Corniche. Its style and beauty alone have made it one of the most sophisticated Rolls-Royce in history, and we imagine it will be difficult for them to top.
