Every generation has an iconic sports bike that seems to define it. These are the bikes that rise above the rest with pure speed and passion. These kinds of bikes have only been around since the 1960s with the introduction of class-winners such as the Bonneville. With that said, the 1990s didn’t meet there sports bike god until the introduction of what would become one of Yamaha’s many great feats: the Yamaha YZF R1.

Redefining History – The Yamaha YZF R1

The Yamaha YZF R1 was released back in 1998 with a beautiful red/white design. It came into fruition thanks to Kunuhiko Miwa, a man that would eventually go on to become the Senior Executive Officer of the Yamaha Motorcycle Division. He began by redesigning the Genesis Engine to make it a bit more compact. This revolutionary design became known as a “stacked gearbox”.

The Iconic Design of the Yamaha YZF R1

The 2020 Yamaha YZF R1 features a 998cc liquid-cooled inline four-cylinder DOHC with 16 valves. The transmission is a six-speed with wet multi-plate assist and a slipper clutch. The suspension includes a 43mm KYB inverted fork on the front and a KYB single shock on the back, both of which are fully adjustable.

A Legendary Timeline of the Yamaha YZF R1 (1998-Present)

The YZF R1 was first released in 1998 with a vertically stacked gearbox and 150 bhp. By 2000, the bike got 150 different modifications, including a titanium exhaust and a lighter body.  The chassis was made to be more rigid and the bottom yoke was stiffened. 

By 2006, the motorcycle had a 20mm longer swingarm, gold fork legs, a brand new bore/short-stroke 998cc inline-four. The next biggest change was the sports bike traction control system that was released in 2012. The new bike that was released in 2015 has Traction Control, Slide Control, Launch Control System, and a few selectable power modes.
